Zhenjiang, a dynamic ancient city with profound history of more than 3,000 years, is a top tourist destination in Jiangsu Province. It is known as a state model city for environmental protection, combining “urban forests” and “grand river scenery”. Surrounded by mountains, dotted with marvelous temples and pagodas, Zhenjiang is gifted with such poetic beauty. Meanwhile it is also a city of history and culture, associated with many great names including the Nobel winner--Pearl S. Buck, Shen Kuo, Wang Anshi, and Liu Xie, leaving amzing worksand touching legends here.

Zhenjiang is also a great place for you to “taste Jiangsu.” Zhenjiang vinegar enjoys domestic and international reputation, unique for its color, fragrance, acid, purity and richness superior than other kinds of vinegar in China. Zhenjiang cuisine also belongs to Huaiyang Cuisine, one of the Top 4 cuisines in China. The noodles and Salted Pork in Jelly are its local specialities.

Transportation

Zhenjiang is not a large city but the transportation is quite convenient. Though there is no airport in the city, traveling by air will not be too much of a problem for tourists in Zhenjiang, since Nanjing Lukou International Airport to the west and Changzhou Benniu Airport to the east are merely 80 and 50 kilometers away from the city respectively. Travelers can go to the airports via airport buses or bullet trains in a short time. The Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway goes through Zhenjiang from west to east, deviding the area into halves. Almost every train running along the Shanghai-Nanjing rail line stops at Zhenjiang Railway Station, making it easy to travel to Zhenjiang by train.

Best Time to Visit Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang has attached great importance to its tourism industry, so in all four seasons there are some interesting activities going on, turning it into a year-round destination. Even so we still suggest that you should avoid going there in summer because it will be quite hot then. Each year from March to April is the blossom season and it is strongly recommended to take your trip now. Attractions like Baota Hill Park, Baohua Mountain and Mao Mountain are worth visiting in spring, for their vibrant beauty. Zhenjiang Culture Carnival, from April to the end of June, is a comprehensive festival consisting of various art performances like musicals, operas, films as well as exhibitions. This is the best time to visit Zhenjiang for sure.

Winter is the best season to visit mysterious Jinshan temple. There are several temples located on the slope of the Jin Mountain. while Jinshan Temple, built over 1,600 years ago, is the most famous one. Most of its fame came from the local legend "The Legend of the White Snake" which has been passed down from generation to generation as one of the best-known Chinese tales.

The temple is enveloped in a shroud of mystery, radiating its unique oozing charm. Every year on December 31st- January 1st, from 21:00 to 0:00 there will be New Year Bell Striking at Jinshan Temple.The custom of striking the bell began from Tang Dynasty, with a history of more than 1,000 years. Every New Year’s Eve, more than 10,000 people from home and abroad flood here to participate in the activity, which includes night tours in Jin Mountain, tourism merchandise fairs, bell striking, wish making and vegetarian food tasting. It is believed that striking the bell will bring you good luck in the upcoming year.
